The First Annual Horseshoe
Championship of the World took place in August 1991. The year before,
a dear friend and founding thrower, Carl
Kahn, passed away. Thereafter, horseshoe tossin at Donner
Lake grew into The Horseshoe Championship the World and became known
as the Carl Kahn Horseshoe Championship of the World.
Key Players:
Carl Kahn,
Jon Weatherwax,
Jim Chesler,
Eli & Mort
Eliason, Chuck
Rogers, Steve
Brennan
How We Became
Friends:
The Eliasons,
Rogers and friends had been coming to Donner for years. The Weatherwax/Cheslers
& friends started coming around 1979.
The groups ended up talking on the beach, playing shoes, (just
friendly competition) and going to an annual
dinner arranged by the Eli/Rogers coaching fraternity.
Much was made of Cal Bears vs. SJSU Spartans vs. Stanford
Indians...
We get together every
year and never miss a beat. Some
even show up for an official/unofficial tournament meeting at the Dutch
Goose in the off-season.
